There was a thick silence in the room as the doctor stared at Jennifer, processing her statement.

“Please be careful with what you say, Jen. That is a very serious accusation.”

“Yes, I know, Doctor. I’m not just saying this as an off-the-cuff statement.” She briefly explained the circumstances of what had happened since the beginning of the year. That he had threatened to make her sick. Then, how she had found the note in Sean’s things while he was in hospital. Now he had insured her for a million dollars. And that she saw the boric acid in the vanity, just that morning.

“Well, the amount you consumed at any one time was likely small, otherwise you’d feel a lot worse. But the effects are cumulative. Which probably means it’s been administered more than once, possibly regularly. Do you have any idea how that could be?”

Jen had given it some thought. “The one thing that Sean makes regularly — every day — is the morning coffee. If I had to guess, I’d say that’s how.”

“I see. Obviously, you won’t be drinking that anymore. We’re going to have to do some follow-up testing, though. We’ll need to know if there has been any permanent damage. Boric acid can burn through your esophagus and your stomach. It can also impair your kidney function.”
