Love to Hatred Turned: Scene 31
The hospital monitored Sean closely for the week after he regained his memory. After the threat, the nurses followed Jen into Sean’s room whenever they could, under instruction to make sure she was safe. Jen appeared unconcerned, joking that she could be at the nurse’s station before he even got out of bed. During that time, though, Danielle was a regular visitor to Sean’s bedside, also scheduling more sessions with him.
The physical therapy was going well. Sean was up and onto crutches. He tackled many daily care tasks, managing mostly by himself with just a few reminders. Although he still got frustrated, he no longer shouted. He kept all the memories that had returned — though still no recollection of the accident. Most importantly, he was keeping more of the new memories.
One morning, Sean looked over at Jen as she sat by his bedside.
“How long have you been here?”
“About half an hour. Why?”
“Have I been doing this crossword the whole time? Jen nodded. Part of rehab was brain games — crosswords, sudoku, and the like which he did daily. “I’ve filled in a bunch of clues, but I don’t remember doing it.” Sean stared at the page, frowning.
Jen walked over to look at what he’d filled in. “The answers look right. Is it possible you did some of the puzzle earlier…
