Jen looked around, trying to figure out where she was. She was hugging Sean’s briefcase to her chest, her brain slowly kicking back in. She could only vaguely remember Helen guiding her down to the parking garage and into the car. Now they were stuck in the late lunchtime traffic, heading to the hospital.

“Oh, my God. I have a million things to take care of!” She scrabbled around for her purse and her phone.

“Hey, slow down.” Helen glanced sideways at Jen. “You don’t have to do anything right now. It can all wait until we’ve talked to the doctors, and you have a better idea of what’s going on. We’re nearly there now, anyway.” The lights changed, and they inched forward.

Jen slumped back in the car seat, but now that she was out of her daze, her fingers fidgeted alternately with the seatbelt, the flap of the briefcase or the buttons of the jacket she didn’t recall putting on. To her newly alert mind, the slow traffic was a further agitation.

Once they arrived at the hospital, Helen let Jen out at the entrance to the emergency department, while she went to find parking. Jen rushed to the registration desk, ignoring glares and grumbles from the people standing in line. She waved to attract the attention of a registration clerk.
