Jen looked around at the now-empty gallery, its lights glittering like diamonds. All evening, she remained guarded and watchful, her nerves strung taut. But now, in hindsight, she knew the opening was a success. That was a good thing, but she sighed, wishing she could have enjoyed it more. Goddamn Sean!

She turned to clear away the glasses and plates just as Eddy came out of the back office.

“What an outstanding evening, all thanks to you. I’m always kinda glad when the opening night is over, though. It comes with so much stress and anticipation. It’s like once it’s done, I can breathe and relax for the rest of the exhibit.”

“Can’t have helped, having all my personal drama play out in the background. I’m sorry.”

“You know I would never agree to you pulling out and staying home. You’ve worked too hard on organizing all this, plus as an artist, you deserved to be here to represent your work. Now, let’s get this clearing up done, then put our feet up with a glass of wine.”

“That sounds like an excellent idea.” Jen smiled at Eddy, her first genuine smile of the night. They tidied in companionable silence, making short work of the mess.
