Sean pulled into the driveway and sat for a moment, looking at the house. It was in darkness, as expected, given that it was twelve-thirty at night. He had paced the floor of his hotel room since checking in hours ago, frustrated at the way things played out with Jen. He should have won that round; his intimidation enough to scare her into submission. He’d never had to deal with actual proof before or, more importantly, Jen having backup.

Well, her friends had gone home now. Sean had checked the street for their vehicle as he drove up. He would let himself in, go to bed, then scare the shit out of Jen when she woke in the morning to find him there once again. He hit the button on the garage door opener. Nothing happened. He hit it again. Again, nothing. What the hell — ?

Okay, maybe it was a coincidence, and there was a mechanical issue. He’d just go in through the front door. He got out of the car and walked up the path, keys still in hand. When he put the key into the lock and tried to turn it, it wouldn’t budge. Stepping back, he examined the lock. The deadbolt lock and handle were a set that was on the door when they bought the house. Nothing looked different. He tried his key again, with the same result.
