Jen arrived early at the meeting with the private investigator, so was glad she had picked up a coffee along the way. She checked in at the reception desk, acknowledging her earliness, then took a seat, thankful that there were armchairs. She would be comfortable while she waited. The investigation agency was reputable, professional and discreet; their offices tucked into a corner on the top floor of a low-rise office building on the edge of the downtown core.

As she sipped her coffee, Jen thought about her reason for being here. Since the night of the barbeque, she had seen even less of Sean. Fine by her. Even now, almost a month later, the thought of that night made her jaw clench. Had he seriously thought that one evening out — where they were playing a charade, at that — could make up for a decade of misery? Honestly, she had thought him more perceptive, but maybe that was because she had fallen for all his lies and manipulation for so long.

However, when he returned from the golf tournament, there was a strange perfume clinging to him, to his clothes, his luggage, even his golf bag. Jennifer suspected what that meant and knew she now had her chance. Hiring a private investigator was expensive, but would be worth it if it got her the proof she needed to move the divorce proceedings into high gear.
