On the Wednesday after the BBQ, Sean headed out after work to a corporate golf tournament up in the mountains. He had spent as little time as possible at home during the intervening days to avoid seeing Jennifer. It was a relief to get away from the oppression of his embarrassment and rejection.

The weather was perfect as he drove the highway out of town — clear skies and sunshine; warm, not hot. The view in front of him was spectacular. A few deep breaths reset his mood. He felt as though he was walking back onto solid ground, back to a place where he was sure of himself.

The company had booked their golfers into the luxury castle-like resort right next to the golf course. Sean would be in the thick of all the action — not just the golfing, but the reception and dinners. It was his element, and he could hardly wait. The tournament itself was not until Friday, but he had opted to take advantage of an early round on Thursday. He had also added an extra day on his personal tab, meaning he wouldn’t have to be home again until Sunday evening.

As he drove under an archway reminiscent of a real European castle and up to the hotel entrance, a valet in a smart uniform stepped forward to greet him. A team of bell people appeared to take his luggage, park the car and show him to the check-in…
